Maui chef caters to furlough 'fry'

Advertiser Staff

Maui's David Paul Johnson, a restaurateur, chef and dad, has created a monthly event aimed at families whose children are out of school on "furlough Fridays."

"Furlough Fry Days," co-sponsored by the Whalers Village, will occur every last Friday of the month featuring hourly chef demonstrations and a farmers market in the Village's courtyard. The chefs will demonstrate healthy dishes and children will get the chance to learn cooking techniques hands-on. The goal, said Johnson, is to keep it educational while it's also fun.
The first Furlough Fry Day is set for Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The events are free and open to the public. Information: 808-662-3000.
