Fast-acting neighbor saves Wilcox classroom from fire

Advertiser Staff

A man who lives across the street from Wilcox Elementary School is credited with extinguishing a fire at a portable classroom Wednesday night, saving it from destruction.

Herbert Honjo saw what he initially thought were flickering lights behind the portable around 9 p.m., Kaua'i police said.

When Honjo realized that it was a fire, he ran across the street and used a garden hose next to the portable to douse the fire.

Police said the fire was extinguished when they arrived on the scene. Officials were investigating the cause of the fire.

Damage to the entry deck, door and a window of the portable was estimated at $3,000.
