Nothing on the road comes free.
The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team learned that the hard way in a 66-60 loss to Nevada last night in the Lawlor Events Center at Reno, Nev.
The Rainbow Warriors struggled at the free-throw line, and it proved costly in the end.
"Unfortunately, some bad calls down the stretch went against us and (Nevada) stepped up and made free throws," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "We had some opportunities at the free-throw line and we needed to make some free throws and we didn't."
As a result, the 'Bows dropped to 9-13 overall with their fourth consecutive loss. More pressing, Hawai'i is now tied for eighth place in the nine-team Western Athletic Conference at 2-7.
Boise State, which was a game behind Hawai'i prior to last night, defeated Fresno State to move into a tie with Hawai'i.
Nevada improved to 13-8 overall and is in fourth place in the WAC at 5-3. Nevada is now an amazing 13-0 against Hawai'i in games played in Reno.
Which only makes the end of last night's game seem more frustrating.
The 'Bows rallied from a 13-point deficit in the second half to tie the score at 56 with 2:02 remaining. There would be no field goals scored by either team after that, and it was decided on free throws.
Nevada went 10 of 10 from the line in the game's final 1:43. During that same stretch, Hawai'i went 4 of 8 on free throws.
For the game, the Wolf Pack converted 14 of 18 free throws for 77.8 percent. The 'Bows went 8 of 17 for 47.1 percent.
Still, it was Hawai'i's best road effort of this season. The 'Bows are now 0-5 on the road, but it was the first time that they did not lose by double-digits.
"I thought our guys showed a tremendous amount of pride," Nash said. "We didn't get the win, but we did play well and had great energy and hustle and kept fighting in a tough place to play."
Roderick Flemings led the 'Bows with 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes.
Brandon Adams added 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the 'Bows to a 35-33 advantage on the boards.
Nevada opened the game with a 10-0 lead, but Hawai'i closed the first half with a 12-0 run to tie it at 28 at intermission.
The Wolf Pack had a 48-35 lead midway through the second half, but the 'Bows refused to fold. A layup by Flemings tied it at 56 before the exchange of free throws down the stretch.
Hawai'i played the final minutes without point guard Hiram Thompson, who suffered an apparent shoulder injury. He had 10 points and four assists.
Luke Babbitt led Nevada with 20 points and nine rebounds, and made six of the team's final 10 free throws.
