Wazzu added to Classic
The eight-team field for the 2010 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic was completed yesterday with the addition of Washington State.
The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team will host the tournament, which is scheduled for Dec. 22, 23 and 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Cougars were announced as the eighth team yesterday by ESPN Regional Television, which owns the tournament.
The other seven teams were previously announced: Hawai'i, Baylor, Butler, Florida State, Mississippi State, San Diego and Utah.
The first-round pairings have yet to be announced.
Butler and Baylor are considered the marquee teams for the second annual Diamond Head Classic.
Butler finished runner-up in last season's NCAA Tournament, losing 61-59 to Duke in the championship game. The Bulldogs finished with a 33-5 record, and three starters are expected to return.
Baylor finished 28-8 last season, and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Bears are expected to be a top-10 team next season.
Florida State also participated in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, and Mississippi State participated in the NIT.
Washington State finished 16-15 last season and is expected to return all five starters.
It will be Gib Arnold's first Diamond Head Classic as head coach of Hawai'i, but not his first experience at the tournament.
Last season, Arnold was an assistant coach for the USC team that won the inaugural Diamond Head Classic championship.
