No. 3 Purdue upset at home

Associated Press

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — One game into Purdue's season without Robbie Hummel, things already have changed significantly for the worst.

The junior forward tore the ACL in his right knee earlier in the week and will miss the rest of the season. Without its No. 2 scorer and rebounder, third-ranked Purdue produced its lowest point total of the season in a 53-44 loss to No. 14 Michigan State yesterday.

The loss snapped the Boilermakers' 10-game winning streak, and came while their other two stars — E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson — combined to go 7 for 27 from the field.

"It's no secret we go through three guys," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "A lot of games this year, two of those three guys would score well offensively and allow that other guy to have an off night. Now it's a little bit different. Now you have that traditional one-two punch and both of those guys have to be productive in the scoring column."

Opportunity knocked for Purdue (24-4, 12-4 Big Ten) a day after No. 1 Kansas lost to Oklahoma State and No. 2 Kentucky lost to Tennessee. Now, the Boilermakers' shot at a No. 1 ranking is gone, their chance at a top seed in the NCAA tournament took a hit, and they fell a half game behind Ohio State in the conference race.

Raymar Morgan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Draymond Green added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans (22-7, 12-4).

The win brought Michigan State even with Purdue in the Big Ten standings.

"We're going to enjoy it until we get home on the plane," Izzo said. "And then we've got to figure out that we've got some work to do here. Michigan State's got to get better, still, too."

No. 5 Duke 67, Virginia 49: Kyle Singler scored 21 points as the visiting Blue Devils (25-4, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the shorthanded Cavaliers (14-13, 5-9), who lost their seventh straight playing without scoring leader Sylven Landesberg, who sustained a bruised right thigh in Virginia's loss at Miami.

No. 20 Temple 65, La Salle 53: Juan Fernandez sank seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Lavoy Allen had 17 points and 20 rebounds and the Owls (24-5, 12-2 Atlantic 10) rolled over the host Explorers (11-17, 3-11).

Xavier 78, No. 23 Richmond 76, 2OT: Terrell Holloway scored seven of his 24 points during the second overtime as the host Musketeers (21-7, 12-2) held on in an Atlantic 10 first-place showdown against the Spiders (22-7, 11-3). Both teams came into the game as part of a three-way tie with No. 20 Temple for a share of first.

WOMEN'S TOP 10

North Carolina 64, No. 6 Duke 54: Cetera DeGraffenreid scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half to help the host Tar Heels (18-10, 6-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) upset the Blue Devils (24-5, 12-2) and earn a needed victory for their shaky NCAA tournament hopes.

No. 4 Tennessee 75, Mississippi 63: Shekinna Stricklen scored 23 points, Alicia Manning added a career-high 15 and the host Lady Volunteers (27-2, 15-1 Southeastern Conference) fought off a second-half rally by the Rebels (16-13, 6-8).

No. 5 Xavier 74, Fordham 59: Ta'Shia Phillips scored a season-high 25 points, making 11 of her 12 shots, and the Musketeers (24-3, 14-0) beat the host Rams (8-21, 2-12) to clinch the school's first undefeated season in Atlantic 10 play.

No. 9 Florida State 94, Maryland 61: The Seminoles (26-4, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) cruised to their eighth straight victory, getting 15 points apiece from Courtney Ward and Christian Hunnicutt in a rout of the host Terrapins (18-11, 5-9).
