Cyclist, seriously hurt by tour bus, settles his lawsuit

Advertiser Staff

A bicyclist and triathlete who suffered paralyzing injuries when a tour bus hit him last year on Kamehameha Highway has settled his lawsuit for an undisclosed sum.

Waialua resident John Henderson, 35, was bicycling toward Wahiawā on May 2 when a Travel Plaza Transportation bus swerved and collided with him in the shoulder lane. He suffered broken ribs, a shattered pelvis, punctured lungs and spinal damage that left him a paraplegic.

Henderson was executive director of Adventure Race Hawaii and had raced professionally.

His attorney, Rick Fried, yesterday announced a settlement in the case but said the agreement included keeping the amount confidential. Fried said Henderson's medical bills alone exceeded $700,000.

Henderson said yesterday he hopes the case will draw attention to the need for motorists to safely share the road with bicyclists.
