Search continues for man last seen off Laniākea Beach

Advertiser Staff

The Coast Guard last night said it planned to search through the evening for a swimmer reported missing off Lani-ākea Beach Park.

The man was reported missing at 4:55 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department. Lifeguards and the fire department deployed search crews.

The man was described as a visitor in his mid-30s, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said. He was wearing black shorts. A female companion of the man reported him missing.

The fire department deployed rescue divers and watercraft to search for the man, Seelig said. HFD suspended its efforts at 7:30 p.m. and planned to resume at first light today, he said.

Ocean conditions in the area were rough, with easterly winds in the 15 to 20 mph range and gusts to 40 mph, Cheplic said. Surf heights were in the 4- to 7-foot range, he said.

The Coast Guard launched a Dolphin helicopter about 6:15 p.m. to join the search.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Coast Guard at 842-2600.
