Warrior volleyball beats USC in four

Jonas Umlauft had 25 kills and Joshua Walker 22 as the fifth-ranked Hawai'i men's volleyball team beat seventh-ranked USC, 32-30, 27-30, 30-18, 30-27, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Los Angeles.

Steven Hunt added 11 kills and 11 digs, and Nejc Zemljak contributed 59 assists and 19 digs for the Warriors (12-7, 8-6 MPSF).

Tony Ciarelli had 21 kills, Murphy Troy added 20 kills and Punahou School alum Riley McKibbin had 60 assists and eight digs for the Trojans (10-7, 8-6).

UH pulled away from a 26-all tie in the fourth game on kills by Matt Rawson and Umlauft, and a hitting error by Ciarelli. After Troy's kill made it 29-27, Umlauft ended the match with his 25th kill.

BRITOS FINISHES 20TH

Freshman Ka'ili Britos faded in yesterday's final round, but still led the University of Hawai'i at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, which ended yesterday in San Jose, Calif.

Britos, a Kamehameha graduate, shot 73-74 in the first two rounds Monday and was fifth going into the final round. She shot 81 yesterday, to finish a career-best 20th at 12-over-par 228. The medalist was San Jose State's Cristina Corpus (74—217).

The Rainbow Wahine were 13th in the team competition, at 311—942. Cal, ranked 12th nationally, won with 297—899.

The rest of the 'Bows all shot their best round of the tournament yesterday. Senior Corie Hou (77—236) tied for 48th, junior Brittany Bomar (75—240) was 59th, senior Erin Matsuoka (79—244) 69th and freshman Brigitte Baker (80—247) was 76th.

UH will host the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, Monday and Tuesday at Kane'ohe Klipper.
