Driver dies after crash inside H-3 tunnel

Advertiser Staff

A man injured in a traffic crash this morning inside the Kanehe-bound side of the Harano Tunnel on the H-3 Freeway has died.

Police said the driver involved in the single-vehicle crash, which occurred shortly before 11:15 a.m., was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said the driver, who appeared to be in his late 30s, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Kaneohe-bound lanes of the freeway were shut down immediately after the crash and police vehicular homicide investigators were sent to the scene.

Kaneohe-bound lanes were closed while police investigated the crash. The freeway was reopened at about 5 p.m.

Shortly after the crash, a turn-around area was opened near the tunnel and Kaneohe-bound traffic was rerouted back down the freeway toward Pearl Harbor.
