Teen killed in Kailua after being thrown from bed of pickup truck

Advertiser Staff

A teenage boy died tonight after he was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck in Kailua.

The incident occurred just after 6:30 p.m. on Kalanianaole Highway near the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility. Police said the truck was traveling north in the right lane when the driver tried to make a U-turn and hit a northbound car that was in the left lane, causing a 13-year-old boy in the truck bed to be ejected and land on the pavement.
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he later died of his injuries, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city’s Emergency Services Department.
The boy who died was not hit by a second vehicle, police said.
A second teenage boy was taken to the same hospital in stable condition, he said.
Police closed one lane of the highway in both directions to conduct their investigation.
