Advertiser Staff

A 71-year-old Kōloa man was killed yesterday morning in a two-car crash on Kūhiō Highway in Līhu'e.

Police said Charles Cushman was traveling north about 4:25 a.m. when he drifted across two southbound lanes and collided with an oncoming vehicle near the entrance to Walmart.

Cushman's car flipped and he was pinned inside. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle, a 43-year-old Kalāheo man, sustained minor injuries. His passenger, a 27-year-old Anahola woman, was not injured.

Kūhiō Highway was closed until 8 a.m. while police investigated.

The incident was Kaua'i's sixth traffic fatality of the year.
