HPU softball falls in semifinals
Lauren Hadenfeld and Katriina Reime teamed on a three-hitter as Central Washington beat defending champion Hawai'i Pacific, 3-0, yesterday in the Gold Bracket semifinal of the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.
Hadenfeld worked five innings, giving up three hits while striking out six and walking two. Reime pitched two perfect innings to earn the save for the Wildcats (18-7).
Caira Pires batted 2 for 3 for the Sea Warriors (30-3).
Earlier, Chante Tesoro hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, lifting HPU to a 3-2 quarterfinal win over Cal State Dominguez Hills (19-15).
HPU's Sherise Musquiz pitched a five-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks.
Sonoma State, ranked 14th in the nation, beat Central Washington, 11-1, for the tournament title.
Hilo falls in quarters: Ali Palermo had four hits and two RBIs, and Julianne Martinez pitched a four-hitter as Sonoma State (25-8) beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 10-2, in a Gold Bracket quarterfinal game. Sierra Green had two hits for the Vulcans (27-12).
Chaminade eliminated: Catherine Schorn and Lauren Zweigle teamed on a six-hitter as Cal State East Bay (9-19) beat Chaminade, 2-0, in a Bronze Bracket elimination game. Keli-Grace Saniatan and Melissa Harris each had two hits, and Kelly Korras pitched a four-hitter for the Silverswords (14-24).
UH 4-0 IN ARIZONA
Monika Eggens scored 10 goals as fifth-ranked Hawai'i won two matches yesterday to finish 4-0 in the Arizona State Invitational at Tempe, Ariz.
Eggens had four goals, and Carmen Eggens and Monique Wilson each added two in an 11-4 victory over Santa Clara.
Eggens then scored six goals, Amarens Genee added five and Sivan Pardon four as the Rainbow Wahine (15-6) swamped Concordia, 23-3. Danielle Igram made 12 saves for UH.
TRACK & FIELD
KAUFMAN JUMPS 6-3.25
University of Hawai'i senior Amber Kaufman cleared 6 feet, 3.25 inches Friday to win the high jump at the Stanford Invitational.
Kaufman nearly broke her school record when she just brushed the bar at 6-4.25.
In other noteworthy UH performances: TeRina Keenan placed third and Careena Onosai sixth in the discus with throws of 165-4 and 152-1, respectively; Madara Apine placed fourth in the triple jump with 40-2; Emma MacCorquodale placed eighth in the hammer throw with 171-3; and Lauren Cutler placed second in the collegiate level of the javelin with a throw of 134-9.
The Rainbow Wahine host the Rainbow Relays Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
HILO FALLS, 20-12
Jay Green, Tyler Bair and Joey Jacobson each had four RBIs and Grand Canyon scored eight runs in the third and seventh innings to beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 20-12, yesterday in a non-conference game at Phoenix, Ariz.
Bair had four hits, including a two-run homer, and Danny Bethea added four hits and two RBIs for the Antelopes (21-17), who amassed 23 hits.
Shane Kessel and Joshua Wong each had three hits with Kessel driving in three runs for the Vulcans (7-19), who had 18 hits.
