UH's Sisto named pitcher of week

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i righthander Matt Sisto, who pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings against Nevada Saturday, was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Sisto, a sophomore from Anaheim, Calif., allowed just four hits while striking out five in UH's 1-0 victory over Nevada. Sisto retired 12 of 13 batters between the second and sixth innings, posting four three-batter innings between the third and sixth.

Sisto is 4-4 with a 6.56 ERA this season.

New Mexico State's Leo Aguirre was named WAC Hitter of the Week.

SAILING

UH CO-ED 13TH

The University of Hawai'i coed team placed 13th at the ICSA Coed National Championship Eastern Semifinal last weekend and failed to advance to national finals.

The semifinal was held on the Cooper River in Charleston, S.C. The Rainbows finished with 313 points and fell short of being one of the nine qualifiers for the nationals.

Boston College won the 18-school regatta with 114 points, well ahead of runnerup and host College of Charleston (149 points).

William Petersen skippered the Rainbows' A division team and Zachary Hester B division. Tahnee Allman, Darla Baldwin and Hannah Tuson-Turner served as crew.

The coed team will be heading to Madison, Wis., for the ICSA Team Race National Championship, May 29 to 31. The Rainbow Wahine will also be there, competing in the women's championship.

GOLF

UH MEN IN LAST

Tiger Woods' record was tied at yesterday's Club Glove Western Athletic Club Men's Golf Championship, but Hawai'i could not keep up and is last after the first round at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

New Mexico State junior Tim Madigan tied Woods' course record with an 8-under-par 64. The Aggies, two-time WAC defending champions, are in second place, two strokes behind Nevada (7-under 281). Hawai'i is ninth, at 4-over 302.

"We struggled today and to be honest we have struggled all semester long to find that consistency from top to bottom," said UH coach Ronn Miyashiro. "We still have two more days of this and we need to continue to try and improve each round."

A dozen players broke par, including Rainbow sophomore TJ Kua, who is tied for fourth at 69. Kua had seven birdies.

UH sophomore Jared Sawada and freshman Cory Oride share 23rd with Boise State freshman Taeksoo Kim, a St. Anthony graduate. All shot 75. Hawai'i's Pono Calip (83) and Kamden Brakel (86) are 44th and 45th.

JUDO

IBERA FINISHES THIRD

Hawai'i Tenri Judo Club's Taylor Ibera defeated eventual champion Alexa Liddie, but fell to Veronica Prado and finished third in the 97-pound division in last weekend's USA Judo Senior National Championships at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in South Carolina.

The division is not an Olympic or world championships weight, but is still contested at Pan American Championships where Liddie won a bronze medal two weeks ago. Ibera, seeded third, won the Pan Ams in 2008.

WRESTLING

CHUN CHAMP AGAIN

Roosevelt alum Clarissa Chun won her second straight Pan American Championship Saturday, helping the U.S. capture the women's team title with four individual champions and seven medalists at Monterrey, Mexico.

Chun won all three of her matches at 105 pounds. She was a World champion and Olympian two years ago. It was Chun's first competition since the 2009 World Championships. She has been recovering from surgery.
