Police identify man killed by mattress fire in apartment

Advertiser Staff

A Kaka'ako man killed in a mattress fire in his Honuakaha Housing Complex apartment has been identified as 69-year-old Ron Cravens.

The management company that maintains the complex on Queen Street said Cravens was one of 150 senior citizens who rent units. The building also contains 243 owner-occupied apartments.

Fire officials said Cravens was dead by the time firefighters arrived at his sixth-floor apartment Wednesday morning.

They said smoking started the fire, which was extinguished by a fire sprinkler. Damage was estimated at $5,000.

Police said the building manager was awakened by an activated fire alarm on the sixth floor and went to investigate.

They said the manager found water seeping out from under the victim's door, entered the apartment, found the bed burning and discovered the man on one side of the bed in a lifeless position.
