Spiker, Tsukumoto, Punahou win state high school tennis titles

Kalani's Jared Spiker successfully defended his state boys tennis title, while Sayo Tsukumoto of Kealakehe won the girls crown at the Carlsmith Ball/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Championships today on the Big Island.

Punahou swept the boys and girls titles. The Buffanblu boys had 17 points, while Kalani finished second with 10, followed by Waiakea with 9. Punahou's girls had 16 points, followed by Kealakehe with 10 and 'Iolani with 8.

Spiker, the boys top seed, defeated No. 2 Matthew Westmoreland of Island Pacific, 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the final. Tsukumoto, the girls top seed, defeated second-seeded Sarah Kukino of Kaua'i, 6-3, 6-2.

In the boys doubles final, fourth-seeded Kallen Mizuguchi and Kaito Mizutani of Waiakea defeated No. 3 Brandon Lee and Erik Pang of Punahou, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (8), while No. 1 Jennifer Laws and Ashley Nakaoka of Punahou defeated second seed Bobbi Oshiro and Kristen Poei of 'Iolani, 7-5, 6-3.

It was Laws' and Nakaoka's second consecutive doubles titles and a third for Nakaoka, who also teamed with Ashley Ohira to win in 2008.
