New drama centers on fashionista lawyer

By Jeff Chung

Two new K-dramas are starting this week; "Life Is Beautiful," a romance/family drama starting tonight, and "Princess Prosecutor," starting Wednesday. Take particular interest in "Princess Prosecutor," as the main star of the series is the up-and-coming Kim So-yeon. She is well known for her evil role in "All About Eve" and, recently, as the North Korean agent in "Iris." Both are produced by the SBS Network and have done well in the ratings.

"Life Is Beautiful" (50 episodes), 7:45 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, re-airs at noon Saturdays and Sundays.

The show revolves around the Yang family. Yang Byung-tae, the eldest son, runs a bed-and-breakfast on Jeju Island with second son Ho-sup. Byung-tae was widowed, married his current wife, Min-jae, more than 20 years ago, and had Ho-sup and Cho-rong. Tae-sup, Byung-tae's son from his previous marriage, and Ji-hae, Min-jae's son from her first marriage, round out the family.

Byung-tae also has his two younger brothers living with him. Byung-jun is a resort executive, and Byung-gul helps him with his farming business.

Chaos erupts in the relatively peaceful household when Byung-tae's philandering father decides to move back in. But there's even bigger trouble brewing in the Yang family. Tae-sup, who didn't tell his family he's gay, breaks up with his girlfriend, and is pressured by Kyung-soo, his love interest, to come out of the closet.

"Princess Prosecutor"; 7:45 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, re-airs at 2:45 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.

Ma Hyeri is a spoiled fashionista who was forced to become a prosecutor by her authoritative father. But her law career hits a bump when her "fashionable" lifestyle and carefree work style cause a rift in her workplace. Her work life gets even more difficult when a picture from her past is circulated. Trying to redeem herself and become a proper prosecutor, Hye-ri puts herself in danger, but Yoon Se-joon, her sulky boss, comes to her rescue, and Hye-ri is smitten with him. Hye-ri's life gets even more complicated when mysterious lawyer Suh In-woo comes into the picture.

Tonight at 7:45 p.m.: The Yangs are a big family running a bed-and-breakfast on Jeju Island. The eldest brother, Byung-tae, is married to TV chef Min-jae. Their eldest son Tae-sup is a doctor who keeps his homosexuality a secret. Byung-tae's elderly mother has three sons, two of whom are unmarried. She's suffered her whole life because of her cheating husband. Chaos ensues in the Yang family when Byung-tae's father pays a visit.

Tomorrow at 7:45 p.m.: Worried about her unmarried stepson, Min-jae asks Tae-sup to work things out with Chae-young. But her well-intended text message to Chae-young backfires and gets her into trouble with Tae-sup. Things get chaotic when Byung-tae's father comes back to the house.

Sunday at 6:45 p.m.: Sun-young tells Ae-rang that Eun-nim gave birth to Yoo-bin. After Eun-nim tells Ae-rang the whole truth, Ae-rang tells Eun-nim to forget about everything else and just do as Gang-ho says. Hyang-sook and Sun-young don't understand why Eun-nim's father tried to break Gang-ho and Eun-nim apart. So Sun-young tells Eun-nim's father who Yoo-bin's birth mother is as a last resort.

Sunday at 7:45 p.m.: Eun-nim's father collapses and falls into a coma after hearing that Eun-nim gave birth to Yoo-bin. Il and Gang-ho's grandmother find out the truth about Yoo-bin's birthday when they overhear an argument between Eun-nim and Sun-young. Sun-young's family also finds out the truth. Il and Eun-nim's father tell them that they must end it. But Gang-ho won't let go.

Monday at 7:45 p.m.: Min-woo and Gae-hwa are both stunned by their sudden kiss. Gae-hwa pretends nothing happened, but Min-woo is still a bit bothered. On the day of the fashion show, Min-woo decides to starve all day for the show, but is tempted to eat the soup Gae-hwa made, only to get sick right before the show.

Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.: Min-woo's worried when he sees Gae-hwa drive away with Si-joon. Gae-hwa has a little birthday party with her daughter, with the cake Si-joon bought her. Gae-hwa is grateful when Si-joon talks her up in front of Min-ji. When Gae-hwa returns home later, Min-woo tells her to be careful about dating her co-worker.

Wednesday at 7:45 p.m.: Hye-ri gets certified as the new prosecutor. People are shocked at how pretty and feminine she is. After the ceremony, Hye-ri goes to the department store and buys high-end-brand ski equipment. Hye-ri and her friend Yuna then head to the ski resort. Overly excited, Hye-ri leaves the car without her wallet and cell phone.

Thursday at 7:45 p.m.: Hye-ri thinks In-woo came to the office to get his money back. She drags him outside the office but soon finds out that he's a lawyer who came to see Sae-jun. In-woo asks Hye-ri why she lied and Hye-ri promises to pay him back. In-wo then suggests they meet during lunch the next day.
