BYUH, HPU tennis advance
The third-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i and ninth-ranked Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis teams advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament yesterday at Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Yuan Jia and Elwin Li teamed for a doubles victory, then won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to lead the Seasiders to a 5-0 victory over 16th-ranked Northwood (Mich.) and into the semifinals for the 12th consecutive year.
BYUH (31-0) will play fourth-ranked Lynn (Fla.) today.
Zora Vlckova and Ingrid Cseh won a doubles point, then posted straight-set singles victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 courts, respectively, as the Sea Warriors upended sixth-ranked California University (Pa.), 5-2.
HPU (20-3) plays top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic today.

UH'S BALENTINE 4TH IN WAC HEPTATHLON
University of Hawai'i freshman Samantha Balentine amassed a personal-best 4,725 points to finish fourth in the heptathlon yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships in Ruston, La.
Balentine, who is from Lodi, Calif., was the only freshman to finish in the top eight and scored five points for the Rainbow Wahine, who are in third place heading into today's first full day of competition.
Yesterday, Balentine placed eighth in the long jump with a personal best of 16 feet, 7.75 inches; finished seventh in the javelin with a personal best of 96-2, then concluded the seven-discipline event with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with 2 minutes, 31.05 seconds.
Idaho's Ulrike Hartz won the event with 5,601 points, followed by Louisiana Tech's Jesseka Jones (4,969) and Idaho's Lindsay Goodman (4,924).
Idaho leads with 19 points, and LaTech is second with 8.
HPU LOSES WEST REGIONAL OPENER
Tim Shibuya scattered five hits over eight innings as nationally top-ranked UC-San Diego defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 12-0, yesterday in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Region Baseball Tournament at Compton, Calif.
Elias Tuma completed the shutout with a perfect inning, Kellen Lee had two hits and four RBIs and Grant Bauer drove in three runs for the Tritons (49-7).
Kale Sumner had a double for the Sea Warriors (37-11), who play Chico State today in the four-team, double-elimination tournament.
Host Cal State Dominguez Hills beat Chico State, 11-4, in the other first-round game.
MCKEE, ISHIDA ON U.S. NATIONAL TEAM
Mililani's Jarred McKee and Waipahu's Jaysen Ishida have earned spots on the eight-man U.S. Under-24 National Taekwondo Team.
The squad was named last week at the completion of team trials in Dallas.
McKee is a finweight and Ishida a featherweight.
McKee was also a member of last year's U-24 team.
