Two killed in three-vehicle crash, racing suspected
A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were killed in a three-vehicle crash on the Big Island that may have involved racing.
The crash occurred around 11:50 p.m. Saturday, when a 1997 Honda two-door sedan driven by the 20-year-old was traveling east on Palani Road and possibly racing with another vehicle when it lost control, crossed the centerline and hit a 2006 Toyota multi-purpose vehicle head-on.
The Honda continued sliding across the west-bound lane and hit a 2007 Chrysler four-door sedan also traveling west.
The driver of the Honda was identified as Kyle R. Buckley, 20, of Kealakekua. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m. yesterday.
The 16-year-old boy, the Honda's passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
The driver of the Toyota, a 25-year-old man from O'ahu, and his passengers, a 21-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy, were treated and released from the hospital.
The driver of the Chrysler, a 23-year-old woman from Kailua-Kona, and her passenger, a 23-year-old woman from O'ahu, were also treated and released.
It's unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but police said "speed was definitely a factor."
