A 62-year-old Kealakekua man is dead and two men are under arrest after leaving the scene of a crash between a motorcycle and pickup truck Sunday night in North Kona.
Hawaii County police say the collision took place about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Route 190 and Mahilani Drive.
They say a 31-year-old Kailua, Kona, man driving a Toyota pickup was headed north on Route 190 when he started to make a left turn onto Mahilani Drive.
The motorcycle operator, also north-bound, tried to overtake the truck in a no-passing zone and the vehicles collided.
Fire rescue personnel took the motorcycle operator to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the man was not wearing a helmet.
The man's name was being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his family. An autopsy was ordered..
Police on Monday said the driver of the truck and a 26-year-old male passenger, also from Kailua, Kona, abandoned the vehicle on Mahilani Drive and walked away from the scene.
Police located the men at a home in the Kona Palisades subdivision and arrested both — the driver for negligent homicide and driving under the influence, the other man for consuming or possessing intoxicating liquor while a passenger in a motor vehicle.
Both men were being held pending further investigation.
