Rainbows pound N.M. State, go to 2-0 in WAC baseball tourney

Collin Bennett drove in three runs to back the strong relief pitching of Zach Gallagher and fourth-seeded Hawai'i beat second-seeded New Mexico State, 13-7, today to stay alive in the winners' bracket of the Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament at Hohokam Park in Mesa, Ariz.

The Rainbows (31-25) will play the winner of tonight's Fresno State-San Jose State game in tomorrow's winners' bracket game at 4:30 p.m. HST.

The Aggies (36-22-1) fall to the elimination bracket against an opponent to be determined after tonight's game.

Alex Capaul (6-2) allowed four runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief of starter Sam Spangler. Capaul was the pitcher of record when UH broke a 3-all game with a six-run top of the fourth inning.

But Gallagher turned in 4 2/3 scoreless innings for his first save. He allowed two hits and three walks, while striking out five.

Bennett was 4 for 5 with two doubles and scored thee to lead UH's 19-hit attack. Kolten Wong was 3 for 5 with three runs scores.

NMSU starter Dan Reid (6-3) was charged with seven runs (four earned) and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
