Team: Punahou

Recap: Punahou won its unprecedented seventh state championship, sparked by a 10-run first inning, to defeat Baldwin, 13-2.

"We always say that's the best way, to take the toughest route," said Punahou senior left fielder Kainoa Crowell, who had a home run, double and four RBIs in the top of the first inning alone. "If we can beat the best teams four straight nights, then there's no question about us. We proved we're the best tonight."

Sophomore pitcher Zachery Muenster — in his third tournament appearance in four days — faced the minimum 12 batters over the final four innings, allowing only one hit, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Punahou finished 15-5-1.

The Buffanblu entered the tournament as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's third-place team for the second straight year.

Division II

May 8, 2010, Hans L'Orange Park

Team: Waimea

Recap: Waimea rallied from a nine-run deficit to beat Kamehameha-Hawai'i, 11-10, when Kalani Fernandez singled to center to plate Mikeo Rita with the go-ahead run in the sixth.

"I told them they got to play Waimea baseball," Waimea coach Michael Rita said. "We started to play, we fell behind and we were down. I told them they got to believe in themselves."

Fernandez worked the final 4 1/3 innings for the victory. The senior right-hander, who started in center field, picked up three-inning saves the previous two days for Waimea.

"Adrenaline. All adrenaline," said Fernandez, who retired the side in order in the seventh. He also had three RBIs for Waimea (13-2), which scored eight runs in the fourth to get within one.

Kamehameha-Hawai'i took a 9-0 lead with a five-run bottom of the second and four-run third.

SOFTBALL

Division I

May 14, Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium

Team: Campbell

Recap: Katie Manumā helped make school history and completed a rare family quadruple in Campbell's 5-1 win over Punahou for the school's first softball title.

Manumā, a senior right-hander, became the fourth and final sister in her family to win a state softball title, after older sisters Valana, Malamaisaua and Anita won titles with Kapolei and St. Francis.

"It feels great, we made history," said Katie, who pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts. "We've been talking about this since freshman year, but we always came up short. It's a dream."

Collette Black drove in two runs and Nicole Arata had two hits for the Sabers (18-1).

Punahou had runners on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Manumā induced a grounder to end the game.

Division II

May 14, Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium

Team: Pac-Five

Recap: Having to choose between her high school graduation and pitching in the title game, Sheridan Mahelona didn't want to let her team down.

Mahelona tossed a six-hitter and Aja Keyes drove in three runs as Pac-Five held off Waimea, 5-4.

The championship game started at 5 p.m. and University High's graduation was at 5:30 p.m. across the street. Mahelona, who made the decision to play the night before, was presented her diploma after the game and was still able to join her classmates at their Project Graduation activity.

"It was fun," Mahelona said. "When I ran back across the street, they asked, 'Did you guys to win?' and everybody was jumping all over me and saying, 'We have a champion.'

"It made the whole night a lot better because there's two things to celebrate."

Waimea had two runners on with two outs in the seventh, but Kylee Yamamoto caught a liner in left field to end the game.

Mahelona was the winning pitcher in the Wolfpack's 2008 title game. The Wolfpack (8-11) have players from University High, Hawai'i Baptist, Lutheran, ASSETS, St. Andrew's and Word of Life.

GOLF

Boys

May 5, 2010, Turtle Bay Resort, Palmer Course

Team: Punahou

Individual: Rudy Cabalar, Campbell

Recap: Campbell's Rudy Cabalar needed an eagle from the fairway and a big birdie on the first playoff hole to win the boys title over Kamehameha-Hawai'i senior Nainoa Calip.

"After that eagle I got pumped," said Cabalar, who shot 69 to finish at 3-under. "Everything started going my way after that."

Punahou won by eight over Moanalua and 'Iolani — 606 to 614. Punahou had four players in the top 20. Senior Bradley Shigezawa shared fifth at 149 with junior teammate Brian Lee. Bou-An Fujeiki, the only other senior, was 15th.

Girls

May 5, 2010, Turtle Bay Resort, Fazio Course

Team: Punahou

Individual: Cassy Isagawa, Baldwin

Recap: Baldwin's Cassy Isagawa hammered home an 8-foot par putt to win by one shot over Kaua'i High's Kelli Oride, who barely missed a birdie putt twice that long moments before.

"I learned never to take anything for granted," Isagawa said. "Never give up because anything can happen on the golf course. You can have a bad hole and can always bounce back. Even if luck is not going your way you still have chances out there."

The Punahou girls won the past four team titles. They went into the final round tied with Baldwin at 13-over-par 229. The Buffanblu closed with a 226 to win by eight at 455.

All five Punahou players finished top 12, led by junior Alina Ching (75—150).

JUDO

Boys

May 8, Stan Sheriff Center

Team: Moanalua

Recap: Brady Lafortune accomplished his goals of winning it all for himself and his team.

It took Lafortune two minutes and five seconds to reach his first goal of winning four state titles, and Nā Menehune placed five judoka in the finals to win their first state team title with 69 points. Kamehameha was second with 56.

Lafortune, who won his 132-pound division by Ippon, is one of four judoka to win four state titles.

"Definitely a hard accomplishment and one of the most difficult feats of high school judo," Moanalua coach Brandon Maki said. "You got a lot of junior national players out there who played in nationals and you're going to have to eventually meet one or two of them. It's a very difficult task. You got to keep that mental focus year in and year out."

Mid-Pacific junior David Terao won at 121 for his third straight state title. Other individual winners were Brendan Chang (Maryknoll, 108), Jordan Ng (Punahou, 114), Tyler Yonemori (Waiākea, 145), Damon Hom Jr. (McKinley, 161), Punahele Soriano (Kahuku, 178), Myer Alo-koa (Hawai'i School for the Deaf & Blind, 198), Dane Pestano (Kamehameha, 220) and Keith Chargulaf-Tuilepa (Farrington, 275).

Girls

May 8, Stan Sheriff Center

Team: Punahou

Recap: The Buffanblu ran away with their second straight girls team title with four first-place finishes. Erin Uehara won at 98, Chrissy Chow won at 129, Mindy Chow won at 139 and Kaimana Lundquist won at 154 as the Buffanblu finished with 85 points. Pearl City was second with 54.

"It's a combination of the coaches and the talent of the players and everyone willing to work hard and wanting to win," said Chrissy Chow, a junior who won at 129 for her third state title.

McKinley junior Brittany Balanay who won her third title at 109. Other winners were McKinley's Marissa Rogers (103), Kamehameha's Bree Rapoza (115), Kalani's Brittney Shinsato (122), Pearl City's Mei Ling Keiki (172) and Sanoe Spencer of Pearl City (220).

TENNIS

Boys

May 8, 2010, Holua Tennis Center & Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort

Team: Punahou

Individual: Jared Spiker, Kalani (singles). Kallen Mizuguchi and Kaito Mizutani, Waiākea (doubles)

Recap: Punahou's boys set a national record by winning their 20th consecutive state tennis championship, with 17 points to runner-up Kalani's 10. Twenty in a row is also the Hawai'i record for any sport.

Kalani's Jared Spiker's 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over ILH champion Matthew Westmoreland gave the Spiker family its seventh state title. The others came in wrestling, with Jason winning one last year and Jonathan getting the grand slam in his Saint Louis career.

Jonathan also earned a save out of the stands, when Jared was disqualified in his semifinal for wearing a sleeveless shirt.

"I thought my career was over pretty much," Jared said. "Then my brother Jonathan appealed. All the people watching helped me out a lot too, especially my team. They helped me get back on the court."

Girls

May 8, 2010, Holua Tennis Center & Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort

Individual: Sayo Tsukamoto, Kealakehe (singles). Ashley Nakaoka and Jennifer Laws, Punahou (doubles)

Recap: The Buffanblu girls won their eighth straight title, out-distancing Kealakehe, 16-10.

Kealakehe senior Sayo Tsukamoto won her school's — and the Big Island's — first girls tennis championship when she defeated Kaua'i's Sarah Kukino, 6-3, 6-2, in singles.

"No one remembers who gets second, or third," Tsukamoto said. "My name will be there forever now."

Punahou's Ashley Nakaoka and Jennifer Laws defended their doubles title, 7-5, 6-3, over 'Iolani's Bobbi Oshiro and Kristen Poei.

TRACK & FIELD

Boys

May 15, Kamehameha

Team: Punahou

Recap: Leading by just 1.67 points going into the meet's final event, the Buffanblu won the 4x400-meter relay to capture the team title.

"With everything on the line, our goal in this race was to come in first," said Punahou senior Kawika Pedrina, whose team edged Kamehameha, 70 to 66.33, in the final standings. "Every other week, we're just going for times. This time, it's coming in first."

Punahou's team of Tim Kamana, Brian Suite, Pedrina and Mike Zane set a record in the 4x100 relay and Kaiwi Crabb won the discus.

Jacob Edwards of Ka'ū defended his state titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles, and also won the triple jump, part of a strong Neighbor Island showing. Kohala's Kelson Kawai won the high jump, Moses Fierro of Waimea won the 100 and defended his title in the 200 and teammate Torrey Santiago won the long jump. Pierce Murphy of Island School won the 1,500 and 3,000 and St. Anthony's Ethan Kim won the pole vault.

Kamehameha's Isaiah Sato won the 800, Lawrence Lagafuaina of 'Aiea won the shot put and Kaiser's Saint Thompson won the 400.

Girls

May 15, Kamehameha

Team: Punahou

Recap: Four records were broken, including both relay events, as Punahou captured its second straight title.

The Buffanblu relay team of Ashley Satterwhite, Julia Brand, Lahaina Zoller and Kyleigh Mann set the 4x400-meter relay time of 4 minutes, 0.08 seconds. Satterwhite also won gold in both the 100-meter (12.52) and 200-meter dashes (25.25).

Also capturing first place for the Buffanblu were Zoller in the 400 (58.37) and Mann in the 1,500 (4:58.59).

Baldwin sophomore Kristine Felix pole vaulted 11 feet, 8 inches to set the record, Kahuku junior Zhane Santiago broke the 100-meter hurdle record, winning in 14.71 seconds, and the Radford girls relay team of Sade Myers, Tyler Whitener, Andrea Hinkle and Kaeli Patton set the 4x100-meter relay record, winning in 48.35 seconds one day after setting the record in trials (48.70).

Radford's Patton also won the high jump (5-2), and Santiago also won the long jump (17-11.5)

Hawai'i Prep senior Ku'uipo Nakoa won two events, the 300 hurdles (44.99) and the triple jump (36-8.25).

Seabury Hall's Hailey Grossman defended her 3,000-meter run title, winning in 10:43.32. Other winners included Kamehameha-Hawai'i's Kaopuanani Sutton in the discus (134-4), Farrington's Monalisa Mariko in the shot put (38-11), and Seabury Hall's Lea Lunblad in the 800 (2:23.83).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Division I

May 15, McKinley High School

Team: Punahou

Recap: Joshua Taylor had 20 kills and Henry Cassiday added 10 as Punahou swept Kamehameha, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20, to win its second straight state title.

"It feels amazing, I'll never forget this season," Taylor said. "Even when I'm an old person, I'll remember this as the most fun guys I've ever played volleyball with. They're special people and fantastic athletes."

Punahou finished 23-0.

"I think they just played the best match of the season," Punahou coach Rick Tune said. "They were clicking on all facets — that's the best we've blocked, it was our best passing match, we served tough, we converted in transition. Every challenge that was put in front of them, they aspired to reach."

Division II

May 15, McKinley High School

Team: Seabury Hall

Recap: Dylan Hamilton had 17 kills and Connor Snow had 13 to help Seabury Hall win the Valley Isle's first state volleyball title with a 19-25, 25-16, 25-8, 25-19 win over Pāhoa.

"Last year things didn't go our way, but we didn't lose anybody from that team and we shared a common goal, but to come here and do it, it's just unbelievable," said Hamilton, whose team finished 12-0.

"We've had this same goal for a while and we have such strong chemistry this year — I think that was the difference. It's great that we were able to show the other islands that Maui has a good volleyball community, too."

WATER POLO

Girls

May 8, 2010, Central O'ahu Regional Park

Team: Punahou

Recap: Shayna Price and Brailey Hirose-Hulbert scored three goals each as Punahou defeated 'Iolani, 9-2, for its third straight title and an undefeated season.

"This group, in particular, had passion to be here every single day," said coach Ken Smith, whose team outscored opponents 157-18. "They train super hard, they totally make a commitment to be the best."

The Buffanblu finished the season 11-0.
