I read that The IRS is aiming to have all returns done electronically in the future. Consequently, the endorsements of many online services this year by the IRS. Just make sure you keep copies of all returns and all correspondence with the Bureau.

I filed with turbo tax and it was very easy and fast. I think paid tax preparers use turbo tax.

turbo tax rules. the paper trail can be done by simply printing out your forms. they also keep your file on record for the duration of the year, so you can always go back to look at something. finally, they send you e-mail verification of the fact that your fed and state returns were accepted. really good stuff.

I file electronically past 4 years, but I have all the receipts and copies of the paper work in case of audit. Haven't been audited.

I would only send a tax return electronically if I were 111000% sure that the data were being transmitted fully encrypted.

A single-transaction purchase at Amazon or with an airline website doesn't concern me as long as I see the keylock. Better of course to be behind a firewall or go through VPN. Consenting to the automated question "shall I save this info" is a risk even on a computer you're the only user of. For myself, I'd rather take the extra little time to type in the info each time.

BTW, take note that if someone captures your credit card number, the two things they usually do first are try to use it at a self-serve gas station and try to get preauthorization online for online purchases.

Another good habit to have. Yearly, spread all cards in your purse/wallet out on photo copy machine and make copies of both sides and keep copy hidden at home. If your wallet/purse stolen don't need to go nuts trying to remember what to replace and who to call and what is the #.
eg. Drivers Lic, credit card(s), ATM, gas card, store card etc, others.

Maureen, this information, especially the extra code numbers on the back of the credit cards, is like gold to a thief. No, like platinum. I would only do this if I put it in a safe deposit box.

I have heard of people writing on their signature field "ask for photo ID" but can't see how to fit that AND my signature in the little space. Anyone else done this with any luck? No, I don't have a huge John Hancock kind of signature.

all of my cards have "see id" on them. i write it in permanent ink. the only entity that requires a signature is the post office. if i need it there, i just sign the card in the corner.

I prepared my Fed and State returns with Turbo Tax. I forget how much it cost to e-file... around $16.95 or so? Since I'm not in a hurry to get my refund checks, I used USPS because snail mail is lower priced.

The data transfer is probably secure, but I am leery about transmitting my Tax ID number and banking information in the same transfer from my home computer. I wonder how many Intuit/Turbo Tax employees have access to the encryption key and how many of them would sell it.

Does anyone know if USPS employees are required to go through a background check and security clearance in order to be employed? I doubt Intuit requires any kind of clearance to work for them.
