Social safety nets...
Well, the forum will be closing soon, and for the most part, it won't be missed, I'm sure. Rail opponents here did not present a convincing argument. So, I believe my supporting argument had its intended affect - according to polls, local support has increased. I tried to present argument that is analytical, factual, rational, reasonable and fair. I'm sure the rail project planning process will proceed less hindered by opponents who are mostly unable to present honest argument.

quote: You've still to address these points from our prior debate. Continuing to ignore is a continual confirmation of you concession:
1. The decennial U.S. Census shows a continuing decline in the percentage of commuters using public transportation in virtually all U.S. cities — regardless of whether they have rail transit or not; public transportation commuting has declined from 12 percent in 1960 to 4.7 percent in 2000. During WWII, public transit use increased significantly due to gasoline rationing. Were a similar situation to occur today, what with John McInsane and his merry band of warmongers vying to get elected and start WWIII, an electric rail transit system may be the only way to keep an essential amount of travel around Honolulu possible. Also, transit use may have declined between 1960 and the 1990s, but it is steadily though marginally increasing since then.
quote: 2. (Rail transit is) only sensible to the train industry and spineless politicians. Train stations give thugs, gangs, and offenders another easy way to reach other areas, therefore spreading their offenses to neighborhoods served by the train. Kaleowao wouldn't know what's sensible if it were handed to him on a silver platter. Criminal behavior will be with us as long as income disparity between rich and poor remains at today's historic level. People are driven to crime because of insecurity, apathy, and injustice. Automobile use is a costly means of travel that significantly adds to the overall cost of living, and subtracts funds from going to support a basic social safety net. The anti-rail crowd is ideologically aligned with Darwinism.
quote: Crime will undoubtedly increase as will noise. Property value will take a huge hit. Modern rail transit is not that loud. Typically, property values near stations go up, not down. As for crime, it has less to do with building a rail system than republican race and class warfare.
