Michelle Wie's PGA Schedule

Rosaforte (sp) on TGC reported that Michelle Wie was considering playing in the John Deere. For some people, that was terrible news. For me, it was great news. First, it was an indication that Michelle was nearing full recovery from her wrist injuries but second, and more importantly, it was an indication that Michelle is still holding her dream of one day playing in the Masters.

Leadbetter's comments about Michelle made in Australia were surprising because they were unauthorized loose talk and a breech of ethics concerning Michelle's public relations rights. If Leadbetter is unable to remain silent with his comments about Michelle, he should resign as Michelle's coach.

Leadbetter's comments about the length of the course of the 84 Lumber were surprising and ignored Michelle's play in round 1, in which her play from tee to green were excellent but her putting was poor. Round 2 did not go as well as round 1. Michelle came in last but received help from the 8 other PGA golfers (including Billy Mayfair and Paul Azinger) who withdrew and 2 PGA golfers who were disqualified.

Leadbetter gave no insight into what happened to Michelle's game after the 2006 Evian.

If John Deere offers Michelle a sponsor's exemption, I hope she accepts.

Leadbetter has apparently changed his mind about his comments in Australia that Michelle will focus only on the LPGA and will not play in the PGA. Leadbetter has now changed his story. He now says Michelle is considering playing in the John Deere.

Sounds like Rosaforte (sp) of the TGC knew more than Leadbetter.

Dismiss one of the most highly respected and successful coach in the golfing world for speaking his mind? Yeah, I guess that would fit in quite nicely with firing a caddy anytime you have a bad tourney.

Listen, what David Leadbetter has forgotten about golf is a million times more than what Michelle's father and her team of advisors will ever know, collectively.

Get rid of Leadbetter and who do you replace him with? Many of the other leading coaches have been influenced, if not directly mentored, by the man himself. Wie's other coach, Gary Gilchrist, is not only a Leadbetter disciple, but he worked as an instructor at one of Leadbetter's academies.

Michelle Wie has a world of talent at her disposal. But she still needs the proper coaching and guidance to realize her full potential. If she listens and heeds the advice from the wrong people, however well-meaning they are, she will end up not accomplishing all that she is capable of.

Hello, paulmacca.

You wrote, "...Dismiss one of the most highly respected and successful coach(sic) in the golfing world for speaking his mind?..."

Yes, for lying, breech of ethics, and using his student for his own personal advantage.

Sirak wrote in the Golf Digest (For Women) "...David Leadbetter was quoted as saying 17-year-old Michelle Wie "hasn't got any PGA Tour events planned at the moment." There is just one problem with the story. It's not accurate..."

Sirak wrote "...Neither Wie nor the William Morris Agency, which represents her, was speaking as of Monday. But Jesse Derris of the Ken Sunshine Agency, the family's spokesperson, told Golf World, "It's fair to say no options have been ruled out."..."

Sirak also wrote "...Others close to the situation, however, spoke anonymously and more aggressively...."Nobody is going to determine her playing schedule except her. If she wants to play against the men, she'll play against the men."..."

Leadbetter's golfing skills and knowledge are not in question. His behavior is.

My responses:

1) Explain to me how David Leadbetter is using Michelle Wie "for his own personal advantage."

2) Interesting that Ron Sirak had to resort to an unnamed, anonymous source in order to come up with the quotes that he needed to discredit Leadbetter, as the only person willing to put his name on the record (Jesse Derris) gave a very non-committal response.

3) I wonder if Mr. Anonymous really has Michelle's best interests at heart, or is he nothing more than a sycophant riding the gravy train by telling the Wies everything they want to hear rather than face reality, however unpleasant it may be. One thing I'm sure of. Mr. Anonymous cannot offer the knowledge and expertise that David Leadbetter can in elevating Michelle Wie's game.

Hello, paulmacca.

You asked "...Explain to me how David Leadbetter is using Michelle Wie "for his own personal advantage."..."

By himself and using his own persona, Leadbetter can get very little publicity for himself and his academy.

However, by talking about Michelle Wie and Michelle's plans, Leadbetter can gain the attention of the world press. His recent comments about Michelle were picked up by several news organizations both in the US and in other parts of the world.

I interpret this to mean that Leadbetter used Michelle's celebrity status to draw attention to himself and his academy. Michelle has her own public relations group to hand her publicity.

Michelle is an alert, aware and bright young woman who can examine the array of advice available to her and make decisions in her own best interest.

Michelle wont be playing in any more men's tours. She fell apart when she quit last year. Lets win a ladies tour first. I am ok with her playing at Waialae. Anything else is a FAR stretch..

Now that Michelle Wie has been invited to and has accepted a sponsor's exemption to play in the John Deere Classic, the next countdown is to the 2007 Omega Masters. Although, OGrady the PGA/Europe head lobbied Omega not to extend a sponsor's exemption to Michelle for the 2007 Omega Masters, Omega was non-commital.

OGrady said he wanted to spare Michelle the torture of playing in that tournament at that site. On the other hand, Michelle's presence at the 2006 Omega (she missed the cut) resulted in increasing the attendance from 4000 in 2005 to 9000 in 2006.

The top drawing golfers of PGA/Europe usually skip the Omega resulting in poor interest, poor attendance and poor viewership. Michelle's presence changed all that and blew the interest, attendance and viewership through the roof.

I'm hoping that when the time comes, Omega will extend a sponsor's exemption to Michelle Wie for the 2007 Omega Masters to be played from September 6-9, 2007.

Soooo, KB1931. After today's debacle in the Ginn Tribute, you better rethink this.

If Michelle's poor play is attributable to her wrist injury, then obviously, she came back too early and that she needs more rest. Which means no John Deere tournament where, if anything, she would be putting more stress on her wrists trying to drive the ball as far as the men. Sorry.

Michelle Wie will never win an LPGA major. She may not even win a tournament. Her psyche is gone. She fell out. She needs to get a job immediately as a club pro for Hawaii Country Club or Ted Makalena or she maybe down at Pohakoina St seeking unemployment. She has fallen that hard..

Michelle Wie at the unemployment office? That'll be a sight. Tink she and her family has already ploughed through the $20 million that Nike showered on her?

Are you sure it's not Jasmine Trias you're thinking about?

Re: Re: Michelle Wie's PGA Schedule

Hello, paulmacca.

I had written that I hoped Michelle received and accepted a sponsor's exemption to the John Deere. She die.

You responded to my comment "...Soooo, KB1931. After today's debacle in the Ginn Tribute, you better rethink this..."

During and after the 2006 British Women's Open, Michelle had difficulty playing well. During the first round of the 84 Lumber, network tapes of her round showed Michelle played well tee to green but did poorly putting. She shot a 77 in that round and the tapes showed she may have missed as many as 10 makeable putts. In round 2, her game fell apart again and she ended missing the cut and was last of those who finished two rounds.

Eight men with very high scores withdrew. Among them were Paul Azinger and Billy Mayfair.

At the 2007 Sony, I saw that Michelle clearly had trouble with her driver but the rest of her game was ok. She missed the cut.

At the Annika/Ginn on Thursday, Michelle's driver/tee shots were still problems and led to what you called a "debacle."

Although Michelle has not reached Tiger's level of play, they both have the same problem now of shaping their drivers consistently. Tiger has put away his driver. Michelle has not.

From what little I saw of the tape delay of the Annika/Ginn, Michelle's driver/tee shots are putting her out of contention. I think she can bring her game back, so I will hold to Michelle playing at the John Deere.

About the Annika/Ginn, I think Michelle would have preferred to play out the last two holes. That is her history. I was relieved that she did not have to flirt with the 88 rule and was able to withdraw.
