Q: I didn't get my copy of The Honolulu Advertiser delivered this morning. What should I do?
A: Call The Advertiser's circulation department at 538-6397 (538-NEWS) to report that your newspaper was not delivered. Customer Service opens daily at 5 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday. A circulation representative will have a replacement newspaper delivered to your house as soon as possible.

Q: I've got a news tip for a story. What do I do?
A: The Advertiser City Desk is the best contact for general news tips.
The City Desk supervises news reports for topics such as state, city and county governments, Honolulu news, education, courts and other news subjects. Here is the contact information for the City Desk:

Q: I have an obituary to submit. What do I do?
A: The City Desk will handle your information on obituaries. (Please refer to the City Desk contact information above.)

The Advertiser publishes obituaries each day about the deaths of people in Hawai'i or former Hawai'i residents who have died elsewhere. People who were well known in the community generally receive larger write-ups, sometimes with a photograph. The picture and the information may come from newspaper sources and/or the family of the deceased.

These obituaries are free and written by the newspaper staff with content determined by writers and editors. Obituaries usually appear on the second page of The Advertiser's Hawai'i news section. The obituaries run once and on a space-available basis. We require either the name of the mortuary handling the services or a death certificate for the deceased. Additionally, we will need the name and phone number of the person submitting the obituary.

A paid funeral notice is a classified advertisement that is limited to information selected by the deceased's family or other survivors and is not handled by the newsroom. Call The Advertiser's Classified Marketplace at (808) 521-9111 to inquire about paid funeral notices.

Q: What if I witness a crime or other news event?
A: If you are witnessing a situation or event that is causing a public danger, contact the police, fire department or other emergency agency before contacting the Advertiser. You can then call the City Desk at (808) 525-8090. City Desk editors may then assign a reporter to talk with you.

Q: What if I have photos or video of a news event?
A: We welcome submissions for photographs for print and photographs and video for our Web site, although we cannot always use them. For print submissions, contact the City Desk at (808) 525-8090 or Multimedia Editor Seth Jones at (808) 525-8079. He can assist you with any questions you may have regarding photo submissions.

Q: What if I find an error in the newspaper or Web site? How do I get it corrected?
A: While we make every effort to ensure stories in The Honolulu Advertiser and our Web site are accurate, we sometimes make a mistake. To let us know about an error in the newspaper, call Marsha McFadden, managing editor for content, at (808) 535-2426 or e-mail hawaii@honoluluadvertiser.com.

The Advertiser's corrections generally appear in the lower left-hand corner of Page A4 under the heading "Getting it Straight."

For Web site corrections, call Sandee Oshiro, managing editor for digital/multimedia, at (808) 525-8063. Corrections are noted in a section of the Web site called "Corrections."

Q: How do I get a reprint of a photo that appeared in the paper or on the Web site?
A: Photographs that appear in The Honolulu Advertiser or the Advertiser Web site are copyrighted and cannot be used for any other purpose or publication without permission. However, you may request reprints for personal use. Select photos and page reprints are available here.

You may also mail in your order. Address your request to The Advertiser Information Desk, 605 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu, HI 96813.

Here is what we need from you to make a reprint:

  • Date of publication of the photograph
  • Section and page number
  • The Advertiser or other photographer's name
  • A description of the photograph (or send along a photocopy).
  • Your name, address and day phone number.
  • Processing time is four to six weeks.

Q: How can I get a back copy of The Honolulu Advertiser?
A: The Advertiser has the last 30 to 40 days of the newspaper available for sale at the Information Desk in the newspaper building, 605 Kapiolani Blvd. There are limited quantities of each issue.

You may also check the Hawai'i State Library and many of its branches for back issues of the newspaper.

Q: How can I get a copy of an article in the newspaper?
A: If you live on O'ahu and the Advertiser article you seek was recently published, you may go to our Back Issues page on our Web site here.
Not all of the articles in the newspaper appear on our Web site and some Web site features do not appear in the newspaper. You may print out articles if they appear on our Web site, but only for personal use.

The Advertiser's library, which is closed to the public, will also accept requests in writing for single articles at $2 a copy ($5 for a full page). For more extensive research of articles, permission is required from Advertiser Managing Editor Mark Platte; librarians will then conduct the research at a rate of $25 an hour. Send your request to The Advertiser Library, 605 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu, HI 96813.

You may also print out articles if they appear on our Web site, but only for personal use. Use our search engine or see our back issues to locate the article you need. Not all of the articles in the newspaper appear on our Web site and some Web site features do not appear in the newspaper.

An archive of stories that appeared exclusively in the newspaper is not available online at this time.

Q: How do I submit a press release?
A: You may submit a press release in several ways:

Q: How do I write a letter to the editor?
A: The Honolulu Advertiser welcomes letters in good taste on any subject. All letters must be signed by the writer and include his or her address and telephone number for verification purposes.

Writers are limited to one published letter per month. Letters should be on a single subject and no longer than 200 words. Letters of any length may be trimmed. You may submit letters to the editors in the following ways:

Q: Where can I park if I drive to the Advertiser to conduct business?
A: The Advertiser is located in News Building at 605 Kapiolani Blvd., located at the corner of Kapiolani Boulevard and South Street.

When you enter the parking lot, park in the customer and visitor stalls closest to the fence.

Our building's business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If you have something to drop off after business hours, you may leave it with the security guard at the diamond head entrance of the building. For more information, call our Information Desk at (808) 525-7620.

Q: Are there tours of the newspaper operation?
A: The Honolulu Advertiser offers weekday, one-hour educational tours to classrooms and groups at the Kapolei Print Facility and The Advertiser News Building on Kapiolani Boulevard in Honolulu. Interested groups can call the Newspaper in Education Manager at 525-7660 to reserve a date.
