There was strong opposition to a bill that would have permitted fishermen to use explosives, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on March 27, 1901.

1928: The Honolulu board of supervisors approves condemnation and acquisition of beachfront property from the Halekai hotel to the Elks club so the land could be a beachfront park.

1931: Brother Joseph Dutton, who gave the last half of his life to caring for Hansen's disease patients at Kalaupapa, dies at St. Francis Hospital. He was 88.

1937: Plans are revealed for intensive war games in which the Hawaiian Islands will be the goal and general base. About 114 fighting ships, a horde of battle planes and 39,000 enlisted men are to take part.

1948: Mokuleia Air Field is redesignated Dillingham Air Force Base. It was named in memory of Capt. Henry Gaylord Dillingham, who was killed while on a mission over Kawasaki, Japan, on July 25, 1945.

1953: Roy Kelley announces plans for two new hotels, including the Reef.

1963: Queen Elizabeth II returns to Hawai'i for a visit. This time, she is given a lei — 'ilima. There was no kiss, however. Gov. John Burns squeezed her hand instead.

1964: Hawai'i is buffeted by a series of tsunamis triggered by an earthquake in Alaska but there were no deaths or serious damage in the Islands.

1984: One of the flows from the Mauna Loa eruption crawls steadily toward the upper reaches of Hilo. State and county officials reject any large-scale effort at diverting the flow.
