| On Nov. 29, 1959, Kilauea-Iki erupted for 9 hours, sending a fountain of pumice to a record 1,700 feet. This picture, taken by Advertiser photographer Takashi Umeda, ran in The Advertiser on Nov. 30, 1959, and covered about three fourths of the front page. The fearless person running toward the fountaining is another Advertiser photographer, Jerry Chong. |
