| The ongoing Kilauea eruption began in 1983. The long eruption destroyed homes, landmarks and the laid-back old town of Kalapana. It also buried Kaimu Bay and its stunning half-moon black sand beach. This photo from 1987 shows lava enshrining the ruins of an old Catholic church in Puna. |
