| In March 1958, workers at the Territorial Bureau of Mosquito Control became sailors in Diamond Head crater. A record 17 inches of rain dumped on O'ahu during a March 5 storm created a 40-acre lake in the crater and the lake became a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The day after the storm, 14,000 mosquito fish were introduced into the crater lake. Chemicals were sprayed on the edges of the lake to kill mosquito larvae. |
