The Honolulu Advertiser
The Advertiser's new look

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
The Advertiser replaces 40-year-old presses

Q: Why did The Advertiser get a new press?

A: The Honolulu Advertiser is getting a new press to replace 40-year-old equipment and to invest in the future of Hawai'i. The Advertiser's new look will improve the readability of the news and advertising in its pages.

Q: What changes am I going to see?

A: In August, all sections of the newspaper will be printed at Kapolei in this new format. Over the next several months, various news and advertising sections will be phased in to ensure the best quality and color reproduction. That's why some sections of the paper will not be the same size as other sections.

Q: Why is the type different?

A: The new text type is designed to be more readable and to maximize the amount of news we can fit on the page. You'll begin to see noticeable improvements later this month as the sections begin to be printed on the new press. For example, the homes section, TGIF, Island Life and Classifieds will be printed at Kapolei this month and Hawai'i's Cars in July.

Q: Will I notice any differences when The Advertiser begins to be printed on its new presses in Kapolei?

A: The Advertiser will have a cleaner, crisper look. Also, there will be more color on inside pages, including the addition of color comics every day. Certain sections — like TV Week and TGIF — will be redesigned to help readers find information with ease. The newspaper's content will remain strong, focused on and relevant to the issues that affect Hawai'i.

Q: Is the new press environmentally friendly?

A: In keeping with a philosophy of preserving and protecting the resources of Hawai'i, The Advertiser practices and promotes recycling. All newsprint used for The Advertiser contains recycled fibers. All newspaper waste is recycled: ink, office paper, printing plates, silver film and even oil from the presses. The entire process has been designed to use energy more efficiently and recycle all materials used in manufacturing your newspaper.

Q: What type of ink will be used on the new press?

A: The inks are low-rub soy-based.

Q: How will the new plant affect my delivery service?

A: Your delivery service should not be affected. The Advertiser will still be delivered to you no later than 5:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.
