Staff Sgt. Douglas Utu
By Delsa Utu
On Nov. 30 my dad, Staff Sgt. Douglas Utu, had another blessed year added to his life. We just wanted to wish you the best of health and spirits on your birthday.
We are so proud of you and all that you do. We would not be the girls we are today had it not been for you and Mom. We love and miss you and continue to await your safe return. We also want to thank you for being our friend, counselor, referee and, most of all, our dad.
You always had the right thing to say regardless the situation, and always had us looking at each situation differently. You never doubted us and you always made sure we reached more than our maximum potential. You provided, nurtured and gave all you can. We will forever be grateful and in debt to both you and Mom. We love you always not ’cause you’re our dad but because you are our hero!
We love you always and can’t wait till you come home!
With love on your birthday,
The Utu Girls
Fehoko, Delsa, Charlene, Danna and Diana
P.S., Don’t worry, we will have all the oka and kalo and palusami when you come home!

Staff Sgt. Douglas E. Utu and the 804th Signal Company
By Delsa Utu
His friends call him Douglas or Utu, but around his family he’s Dad. My dad, Staff Sgt. Douglas E. Utu, is part of the 804th Signal Company “Cable Dogs” out of Fort Shafter. They were deployed to Afghanistan on June 28 and will be there for a year and a half.
He was born and raised in American Samoa and graduated from Leone High School. He has been in the Army more than 20 years. He is known for that serious look, but everyone and anyone who knows him knows that he’s all jokes.
All our lives my dad has made it a point to put our lives before his, and in some strange way his family values have rolled into his Army life. The funny thing is that my dad and my brother are the only males in our household and they have five girls to deal with. We miss him so much and pray for his safe return.
We love you always, Daddy!

Sgt. 1st Class Richard F. Uyesato is serving in Iraq. |
By Leona Uyesato
This is my husband, Sgt. 1st Class Richard F. Uyesato. He is in the Army Reserves.
He has been in Iraq since March with the 411th Engineer Battalion from Fort Shafter. He will be there for one year.
We have been married for eight years. I look forward to his phone calls and letters. He is truly a local boy who loves to surf.
I'm so proud of him. I support and pray for him and the troops every day.
Rich, keep positive, safe and alert.
I'm counting the days until you will be back home here in Hawai'i.
Aloha!
