Working in the rain

By Jan TenBruggencate

The sky was overcast and the weather cold at dawn. It cleared and was sunny for a couple of hours, but a black weather front swept in from the north at midmorning, enveloping crew and canoe in cold and wet.

Crew and volunteers washed all the fresh fruits and vegetables on board in salt water, to remove or kill any bugs that might infest the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Sailors worked in the rain, lashing gear into place, stowing personal gear, slinging a stalk of green bananas from a railing and hanging fruit and onions in mesh bags. Videographer Na'alehu Anthony shot brief interviews from the deck of the Hanalei Pier of some crew members for TV news stations. It was video he had hoped to film on board, but the rain and lack of cover made that impractical.
