Hokule'a leaves Laysan, scientists behind

By Jan TenBruggencate
Advertiser Science Writer

We left the eight scientists living on Laysan Island sitting on the beach.

Except for a visit later this week by a supply ship, we would be the only folks they'd see for months, and we had become friends, eating and working together.

We could see the group of them, sitting at the waterline, watching us disappear, as Keoni Kuoha and I blew a pair of pu to signal out goodbyes to the island.
