Republican turnout helped carry Lingle

Democrat Mazie Hirono and Republican Linda Lingle meet after winning their party primaries in September. Lingle's victory in the general election places a Republican in the governor's seat for the first time in 40 years.

Tuesday's general election represented one of the most important for Hawai'i since statehood.

Beyond the heated race for governor won by Republican Linda Lingle and the election of U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink despite her death, Tuesday saw the election of candidates running for lieutenant governor, U.S. House 1st District, state Board of Education, state Senate, state House, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Maui and Kaua'i mayor, Honolulu City Council, Maui County Council, Kaua'i County Council, Hawai'i County Council and several state Constitution and county charter amendments.
