We have Lost a Great Leader

I am so sorry for the loss of Patsy Mink.  I have lived in the Islands for many years and her voice was always one of justice and concern for the islands she loved.

Virginia Chamberland

Thank You, Patsy Mink

Always an advocate for us seniors, you spoke hard, loud and strong for us. I will forever miss your voice. God has called you home; you shall be missed. To your family I send my heart full prayers.

God bless You and mahalo forever and ever.

Lois Bunin

Aloha, Patsy Mink

I have relocated to Florida, however, keep up with the news of home. I was saddened to hear of Patsy Mink's passing. I can hardly remember when Patsy Mink was not a part of our political life in the Islands. She was a role model long before role models were an "in thing" to be. There are many of us who saw her dedication and success during our youth, our teens and our adulthood.

From across the sea, my message may not be much, but it comes from the heart with fondness and aloha to a fine lady.

Aloha, Patsy Mink.

Patsy Mink Remembered

Many years ago, I traveled to Washington, D.C., as part of a group of Asian Pacific Americans learning about the political process. We had dinner one night with Congresswoman Mink and I was fortunate to sit directly across from her. I related that I was also originally from Hawai'i and had truly admired all that she had done over the years for Hawai'i, women and people of color. I asked her how she felt to be a woman of color in Congress.

She looked me in the eye and said with a clear voice, "I feel very, very equal."

May we never forget her courage, determination, graciousness and wisdom.

Mahalo to Mink

We are going to miss your leadership and representation for the people of Hawai'i. Thank you.

Patsy an Icon for Japanese-American Hearts

To the family of the late Patsy Takemoto Mink (John, Gwen and other family members, and all the  people who loved her),

Patsy was a " giant" greatly respected  by all who knew her. She worked hard for the people of Hawai'i with unparalleled insight in providing results for her beloved state.

Aloha, Patsy. I am fortunate to have known her through my dad's admiration for her and his support for her throughout his lifetime. My dad is the late Samuel Sasano of Stonecraft Memorial in Kalihi, Hawai'i. I remember my dad being so devoted to her. He shut his Stonecraft business down for 3/4 months to help her campaign, driving her around everyday when she first decided to run for U.S. House. He loved her very much and believed in her. He was happy to serve her as she served the people of Hawai'i.

Mahalo nui loa and aloha 'oe, Patsy.

Aloha to Patsy Mink

I first met Patsy Mink in my sophomore year at UH where she was a fairly brand new teacher of business law. It was interesting as she was only about 5 to 6 years older than I. Since that time, our paths had cross many times, both professionally as lawyers, and politically during my time as administrative assistant to then-Congressman Spark Matsunaga. She was a tough lawyer and a person who cared for the people of Hawai'i and worked diligently on their behalf. She will be sorely missed by her family, her friends and the entire state of Hawai'i.

Conservative Bids Goodbye

I am a "Ronald Reagan" conservative, but being born and raised in Honolulu, I will miss her!

I met her in 1975 at the Capitol and she was a nice host!

Sincerely,

Sending Condolences

I heard the sad news about Patsy late Saturday afternoon.

My girlfriend and I spoke at length about our huge loss with the passing of this woman warrior and who would be able to continue her campaign and advocating for the under-privileged.  Later that evening, as my husband and I waited at the 'Aina Haina stop light to head on home, I spotted an elderly Asian man standing on the sidewalk.  Holding a plastic shopping bag, he seemed lost and out of place.  When the light turned green, I told my husband, "we gotta go back, see if he's okay".

Sure enough, "Harry" was 80 years old with failing eyesight - no identification on him - and most likely Alzheimer-afflicted.  He had taken the wrong bus, couldn't read the street signs and was totally disoriented. After some cajoling he agreed to let us drive him back into town, home address still unknown due to his mental capacity.

Eventually, with the assistance of a friendly and capable HPD officer, we were able to contact a relative and deliver Harry home safely. Though the timing of this episode with Patsy's death is coincidental, for sure I can't help but read part of her message in all this.

We have got to look out for each other and have compassion for those less fortunate and without a voice.

Mahalo Patsy for your voice.  You'll be missed but not forgotten.

Aloha, Patsy

I lived in Honolulu for 20 years but now live in Nebraska, and I try to keep up with the news whenever I can. I was shocked and saddened to hear that Pasty Mink has passed away. I remember that she did so much to serve the people of Hawai'i. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family.

In Memory

My sincere condolences to the Mink family. Living in a Washington, D.C., suburb (an expatriate from Hawai'i), Patsy of all our Congress persons was the closest to a humanist who worked for the good of people. She will be missed.

Aloha

Aloha, Patsy Mink

Growing up in Hawai'i and sharing the same first name like Patsy Mink has always been a blessing!  While I no longer live in Hawai'i, I still keep up with local politics. I last saw and heard Patsy Mink at the Women Caucus' Lunchtime Rally at the 2000 Democratic National Convention, in Los Angeles, Calif., where I was volunteering.

Patsy spoke with her trademark intelligence, energy and compassion. Many next to me asked, "Who is that feisty Asian-American politician?"  I replied, "She's Patsy Mink from Hawai'i, a long-time U.S. representative. Isn't she great?"  They nodded "yes."

So I was very sad to hear that Patsy Mink did not win her battle with pneumonia. She was a pioneer and a champion, who always took the time to reply to you when so many others never did!  Hawai'i and the rest of the United States will sorely miss this great woman!
