Aloha, Patsy

You were one of very, very few politicians I trusted to stick to your principles. You fought the good fight. R.I.P.

Remembering Mink

Power. Grace. Vision. These are the words that come to mind when I think of Rep. Mink. There were many obstacles for her to overcome in Washington. Tiny in stature, she was also a minority, a woman and an Asian, but undaunted and unintimidated.

I will be eternally grateful to her as an important piece of legislation she helped to author changed my life dramatically. Because of Title IX, as a freshman in high school in the early 1980s, I was a member of the first-ever girls' varsity soccer team at Pearl City High School.

The boys' team had been in existence since the 1970s, and in an attempt to have parity and to meet the growing interest in soccer, a girls' team was added.

Participating in sports taught me many useful life skills: commitment, leadership, and loyalty, to name a few. It also allowed me to travel and make new friends. Thank you, Mrs. Mink, for making this possible for me and the many, many other women who were beneficiaries of your vision and dedication. We will all miss her.

Condolences

An open letter to Rep. Patsy Mink's family and friends,

Our prayers are for Patsy's family and friends. In this time of sadness, we pray that God will sustain all of you because of her death. It was our pleasure to meet Patsy when Carol ran against her in the general election in 1998, and so we obviously were concerned with her welfare and physical condition. Please count on our prayers that all of your loved ones, family and friends will be comforted and filled with hope in spite of her passing.

We all wish you and your loved ones well in your time of trial and hope that God's light may shine on all of you as we all mourn her passing. Aloha!

Sincerely,
Eugene and Carol Douglass

Aloha, Congresswoman Patsy Mink

The nation has lost a champion of human rights who has left a legacy that is seen in the respect, equality, and opportunity that many would not have enjoyed were it not for her eloquent, principled and honorable efforts.

Her stance for what is right and just, her life that was guided by high values, and her genuine love and concern for others, that never wavered in the face of unpopularity, harsh criticism, and bitter attacks, will be a model for all of us who are left.

My sincere thanks to Congresswoman Patsy Mink. We will miss her. Aloha and Mahalo.

Condolences to the Mink family

Mahalo for your leadership and dedication, Patsy Mink. Patsy Mink made a major impact in the lives of many people. She moved through issues with her wisdom and truth. She made a difference, as a mentor and leader who fought for ALL people. We thank you for all that you have done and – because of you – will continue. You will be missed. God be with you and your family. Aloha, Patsy.

Sincerely,

Condolences from Oregon

Aloha from Oregon,

While in Oregon, my son and I heard of the passing of Patsy Mink on a CNN news report.  We both were shocked and saddened.  We suddenly felt so far away from our home on Maui. The newspapers here have printed stories about Patsy's accomplishments.  Even though I always voted and supported Patsy and I knew she spoke out for peace, women's rights and issues of our Islands, I must say, I never realized what an incredible impact Patsy had on women.  She was quoted in one article regarding her co-authorship of Title IX.

To be frank, I thought this was great, a beginning statement of policy and intent. At the moment we were doing it, we didn't think it would have this fantastic momentum and the enforcement of the courts.

To her family, our deep sympathy. She will be missed, but not forgotten. That momentum will continue, Patsy.

Aloha oe

Patsy Served the People

As an public advocacy director for a major non-profit health organization, I have opportunities to occasionally travel to Washington, D.C., to lobby our congressional representatives.

On any number of occasions, after making appointments weeks in advance, I have been met in a representative's office by an aide apologizing that the representative had been called away to another meeting. While I don't discount the importance of sharing information with key aides, I never had to do that with Patsy.

On every occasion, she kept her appointments with me, listened attentively and then discussed her views. She didn't always agree with the positions that I was advocating, but I always came away feeling that she understood them and would consider them before casting her vote on legislation. And when she voted, it was with her constituents' best interests in mind.

For that she earned my respect.

Tributes and Condolences for Patsy Mink

"Aloha Ke Akua – God is Love."

It takes a long time to get used to the loss of someone we love.  But it's important to remember that when people die, they leave something very special behind.  They leave us memories,  of many things they said and did.  And as long as we have those memories, the people we love will live on in our hearts and minds.

Our heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Me kealoha pumehana kakou...God bless you all.

Aloha, Patsy

Aloha no to a great politician.  My mom loved her only because she stood up to everything that was put to her and will always remember how she did everything in her power to fight for everything for Hawaii and minorities and women!!!!

May she rest in peace!
