OKAZU, PLATE LUNCH AND TAKEOUT

The Islands are home to literally hundreds of small take-out shops, okazuya (Japanese delicatessens), plate-lunch places, manapua shops and bento stands. This is a mere sampling.

GULICK DELICATESSEN

Lee and Cory Makishi have taken over their parents' venerable deli on a neighborhood street in upper Kalihi, and the line forms on the left (once you find someplace to park). This was one of the first okazuya to be discovered by nonlocal foodies, written up in media far and wide, adding to the traffic, but encouraging the brothers to branch out and try some new dishes. We love the immense corned beef and potato hash patties, the fried chicken, the musubi.
