CASUAL DINING

As we define it for this guide, casual dining is a state of mind. It doesn't necessarily mean inexpensive, though it usually implies good value — getting as much or more than you paid for. It doesn't necessarily mean shorts and slippers, though it suggests a relaxed dress code.

GORDON BIERSCH BREWERY RESTAURANT

We enjoy Gordon Biersch for the view of ever-changing Honolulu Harbor, the friendly bartenders and the fresh brewpub and seasonal beers. Favorites include the skewers plate (grilled goodies on skewers with a rice cake and cucumber salad), the Marzen barbecue ribs made with their own lager, the drunken poke and — need we say? — the garlic fries. Note the late hours for appetizers.

Aloha Tower Marketplace, 1 Ala Tower Drive. 599-4877. www.gordonbiersch.com. Lunch: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Dinner: 4-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 4-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Late-night appetizers until midnight. Bar open until 1 a.m. Reservations recommended. Valet parking and self-parking. VS, MC, AX, DC, DS, JCB. No checks. Lunch: $$. Dinner: $$$.
