CASUAL DINING

As we define it for this guide, casual dining is a state of mind. It doesn't necessarily mean inexpensive, though it usually implies good value — getting as much or more than you paid for. It doesn't necessarily mean shorts and slippers, though it suggests a relaxed dress code.

HULA GRILL WAIKIKI, Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach

Hula Grill at the Outrigger on Waikiki Beach offers a Paniolo Omelet breakfast and a great view of Waikiki beach and Diamond Head.

An ocean view, plantation-era furnishings, live contemporary Hawaiian music in the bar and good Pacific Rim-style food — what's not to like? Hula Grill, which opened in this newly renovated hotel in August, is the cool and calm older brother of wild and woolly Duke's downstairs (they're both owned by TS Restaurants). Chef Mark Kowalkowski, formerly of Hula Grill Maui, delves into fine dining with intriguing pupu and grilled seafood and steaks with an emphasis on local ingredients.
