2004 'ILIMA AWARD WINNER - CASUAL DINING
As we define it for this guide, casual dining is a state of mind. It doesn't necessarily mean inexpensive, though it usually implies good value — getting as much or more than you paid for. It doesn't necessarily mean shorts and slippers, though it suggests a relaxed dress code.

12th AVENUE GRILL

12th Avenue Grill, which opened in 2004, is going to have to clone itself to keep up with the interest in chef-owner Kevin Hanney's clever and delectable contemporary diner dishes. Have the mac and cheese.

Andrew Shimabuku • The Honolulu Advertiser

Longtime local caterer Kevin Hanney is the mind behind this smart retro diner on a Kaimuki back street. He hired some of the city's best-trained waiters, made a deal with an award-winning dessert chef (Lisa Siu) and joins his chefs on the line to turn out the signature kim chee steak (it's not what you think; order it), a feather-light and unforgettable macaroni and cheese, pan-fried trout with truffle butter and daily specials. Go early or late; no reservations taken.
