2005 'ILIMA AWARD WINNER - BEST BAKERY

In the 10th anniversary year of the 'Ilima Awards, these are the restaurants that turned the heads of our readers and our in-house food experts.

BEST BAKERY
Liliha Bakery

The Liliha Bakery's coco puffs and Champion malasadas are favorite ways Islanders satisfy their cravings for something sweet and decadent. There are, of course, plenty of other toothsome alternatives.

Take a number, smile at the lady, point to the coco puffs and the cinnamon twists and the azuki turnovers, pick up your box and walk out smiling. It's a formula that's worked for 55 years at Liliha Bakery, founded by Koo Takakuwa and now run by the second generation. The line forms before daybreak six days a week, both for the service bakery and the 18-seat counter where you can eye the awesome butter mountain while you wait for your hotcakes or hamburger steak. Lively and nostalgic.

515 N. Kuakini St. 531-1651. Open around the clock from 6 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday. No reservations. No credit cards. Checks accepted. $.
