  BAKERIES

Take a look around any interisland airport terminal and you'll see folks toting grease-stained bakery boxes tied with string or suspended in plastic bags. We just love our baked goods and we love to give them as gifts. Here are some of our favorite O'ahu bakeries, with their specialties.

Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop

Agnes', on a Kailua side street, is one of the few places in Hawai'i to nurture the Islands' Portuguese culinary heritage, selling not only hot, made-to-order malasadas (hole-less doughnuts) but also potato bread, sweet bread and eat-in or take-out Portuguese bean and caldo verde soup. The bakery also offers a full line of baked goods, among them our favorite raspberry-filled Russian tea cakes that resemble ultra-rich scones, but also healthful, low-fat breads.

46 Ho'ola'i St., Kailua. 262-5367. 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday. No reservations. VS, MC, DS. Personal checks accepted, no travelers' checks. $.
