  BREAKFAST

Ask anyone with high standards on breakfast and they'll tell you: It's tough to find perfection. Lots of places have great local-style breakfasts — Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice, or fried rice with an egg on top. But few places have it all: good food, good coffee, sit-down service, reasonable prices and no Styrofoam. Other breakfast spots elsewhere in this guide: Brent's Restaurant & Delicatessen; Kaka'ako Kitchen; Nico's at Pier 38; Orchids; Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch & Crab; Pineapple Room. Most high-end hotels have exceptional breakfasts, but prices are steep.

Koa Pancake House

We like this Kane'ohe diner because the menu is out of the ordinary; Crepes Suzette at breakfast, house-made orange syrup for the pancakes, mahi jun (Korean-style battered fish) and a really good teri beef at lunch, and it's almost the only place around where you can get vinha d'alhos (pork, pickled and grilled in the Portuguese style). On weekends, the lineup starts just after dawn and continues through lunchtime.

Three locations: 46-126 Kahuhipa St., Kane'ohe, 235-5772; 99-115 'Aiea Heights Drive, 'Aiea, 488-8805; 703 California Ave., Wahiawa, 621-0123. Breakfast menu: 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. Lunch menu: 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. No reservations. VS, MC. No checks. $.
