  BURGERS AND BARBECUE

O'ahu is home to dozens of food establishments that specialize in doing one thing very, very well. Here's a sampling of restaurants that know burgers and barbecue.

Kua 'Aina Sandwich

Let's get this straight: Yes, they serve sandwiches, but it's the meaty, smoky burgers that most people come for, in your choice of 1/3- or 1/2-pound sizes. Not to mention the exceptionally good fries. The ambience is part of the allure: flames leaping off the grill, classic surf posters on the wall, paper-towel holders at each table to deal with the mess, and that big carrot stick. Expect lines and a wait at peak hours.

Two locations: Ward Centre, 1200 Ala Moana, building 6, 591-9133, 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday. Also: 66-160 Kamehameha Highway, Hale'iwa, 637-6067, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. No reservations. No credit cards. Checks accepted. $.
