2005 'ILIMA AWARD WINNER - BEST NEW RESTAURANT

In the 10th anniversary year of the 'Ilima Awards, these are the restaurants that turned the heads of our readers and our in-house food experts.

BEST NEW RESTAURANT
E&O Trading Co.

Invitingly outfitted with Indian and Indonesian textiles, bright splashes of color and a bar that resembles an Asian temple or tea house, this first entry into the market of a San Francisco-based chain offers a pan-Asian menu in a spacious venue at Ward Centre. Though a bit pricey (given how readily you can find cheap Asian food in Honolulu), the food is enticing, particularly the signature Burmese ginger salad, Indonesian fried rice, char siu-style smoked mero (a sea bass), and the decadent deep-fried corn fritters — the latter positively addictive. House-made juice and tea drinks add interest.

Ward Centre, 1200 Ala Moana. 591-9555. 11:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Reservations recommended. Valet and self-parking. VS, MC, AX. No checks. $$.
