  CASUAL DINING

When we're not in a dress-up mood, when it's lunch with a friend or dinner with a crowd, when we want to eat well without breaking the bank, these are the restaurants we choose.

The Contemporary Café

Located beneath The Contemporary Museum, this indoor-outdoor restaurant spills onto the lawn of what was once the hillside residence of a prominent O'ahu family. Working in an Alice Waters mode, manager Adam Gilbert focuses on what's fresh, what's healthful, what tastes great, such as our longtime favorite, the folksy and simple hummus plate with feta, olives and exceptionally good bread. It's worth asking about the daily specials, including the crostini of the day; these are always tempting. As we went to press, plans were under discussion to move and expand the restaurant to a nearby property purchased by the museum.

The Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive. 523-3362. Lunch: 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday; noon-2:30 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday. Reservations recommended. VS, MC, AX, DC, DS, JCB. Checks accepted. $.
