  CASUAL DINING

When we're not in a dress-up mood, when it's lunch with a friend or dinner with a crowd, when we want to eat well without breaking the bank, these are the restaurants we choose.

South Shore Grill

Driving past South Shore when you're hungry would be sheer folly. Linda Gehring (spouse of Ted Tsakiris of Teddy's Bigger Burgers) runs the show here and offers cheap, quick food with a gourmet twist — hearty portioned plate lunches, heaping sandwiches served on ciabatta, well-stuffed burritos and various salads. The boldly colored interior might remind you of a clown, but they aren't fooling around with half-pound burgers topped with chipotle aioli; salmon grilled to order served Cajun-style, with mac-nut pesto or a soy-sesame sauce and Caprese salad made with fresh buffalo mozzarella. Save room for the housemade desserts.

3114 Monsarrat Ave. 734-0229. 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. No reservations. No credit cards. No checks. $.
