O'ahu is home to hundreds of ethnic restaurants — most heavily Asian, most of them small, inexpensive and family-run, and all with their regulars and passionate fans. We couldn't possibly visit them all in a year, much less include them all in this guide. So this is just a selection, focused on offering as wide a range of cuisines as possible.

Kai

A funky food boutique with prices that won't make you wince, Kai sprouted from four shops in Tokyo and brings to locals the latest in izakaya (tavern-style) fare with a concentration on Osaka-style okonomiyaki (a savory Japanese pancake layered with a variety of fillings). Its sleek interior offers a teppan (griddle) bar for yaki (grilled) dishes, seared rib-eye steak and okonomiyaki that complement their trendy cocktail selections the way a Chanel clutch goes with a pair of Manolos.
