When The Advertiser sent out a call for nominees for best breakfast spot a while back, we got an avalanche, with many strong opinions. And because we are so volume- and value-conscious, brunches and buffet spreads have strong appeal. |

Makino Chaya, founded by a veteran of Japan's Todai chain, offers a wildly popular hybrid buffet and sit-down concept. Select from salad and sushi bar (30 types) and fried-food table, then order donburi (rice bowls), tempura or an amazing variety of seafood, including Alaskan king crab, half-shell oysters, snow crab legs, dungeness crab, shrimp tempura, shrimp cocktail, sashimi, miso butterfish. A place to fill up without getting tapped out.
