  CASUAL DINING

When we don't want to dress up, when the budget is a bit busted, when we're hanging out with the gang, these are the restaurants we choose. There's considerable variation among them in price, food style and atmosphere, but all cultivate a relaxed feeling and, in most cases, there's no need for reservations or anything fancier than T-shirt and slippers.

Banzai Sushi Bar

It's Hale'iwa, dude, so naturally this isn't your average sushi bar. It's owned by a Brazilian, Alessia Ucelli, with a Brazilian chef, Renato Silva, and the menu takes a South American turn every once in a while, with ceviche alongside cucumber-salmon roll. The open-air ambience also offers a flavor of grass-roofed huts on Ipanema Beach; a covered deck includes conventional tables and also pillows-on-floor seating. Surf videos play, and there's often live music.

North Shore Marketplace, 66-246 Kamehameha Highway, Hale'iwa. 637-4404. 5-9:30 p.m. daily. VS, MC, AX. No checks. Lunch and dinner: $. Brunch: $$. Limited selection of sake, beer and wine.
